How conversion works
Every category has a base unit — metres for length, kilograms for weight, litres for volume — and each unit carries a factor relating it to that base. Converting means going to the base and back out again, so any pair of units in a category works without needing a table of every combination.
Temperature is the exception
Temperature scales have different zero points, not just different step sizes, so a single multiplier cannot express them. Celsius is the base here, with explicit conversions:
°C = (°F − 32) × 5/9and°F = °C × 9/5 + 32°C = K − 273.15andK = °C + 273.15
Details worth knowing
- Data sizes use binary multiples — 1 KB is 1,024 bytes, matching what your file manager reports rather than the decimal 1,000 that drive manufacturers print on the box.
- Exact definitions. An inch is exactly 0.0254 m and a pound exactly 0.45359237 kg by international agreement, so conversions here are not approximations.
- Very large and very small results switch to scientific notation instead of showing a wall of zeros or rounding away to 0.000000.
- Both fields are live — type in either box and the other follows.
