Add GST vs Remove GST

Add GST takes a pre-tax amount and adds tax on top — use it when you are quoting a price. Remove GST works backwards from a tax-inclusive figure, such as a shelf price or a receipt total, to find the taxable value hidden inside it.

Why the order matters

Discount is applied before tax, because GST is charged on the amount actually received. Taxing first and discounting afterwards overstates the tax and produces an invoice that will not reconcile.

The mistake to avoid when removing GST

To strip tax out of an inclusive amount you divide by 1 + rate:

taxable value = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)

Subtracting total × rate instead is the classic error — it takes the percentage of the wrong base. On ₹10,000 at 18% that difference is about ₹275, which is exactly the kind of gap that shows up at reconciliation.

CGST, SGST and IGST

  • Intra-state (buyer and seller in the same state): the tax splits evenly into CGST and SGST — 18% becomes 9% + 9%.
  • Inter-state: the full amount is charged as IGST.

Shortcut buttons cover the Indian slabs — 0, 3, 5, 12, 18 and 28% — and any other rate can be typed directly. Use the copy button to paste a complete breakdown straight onto an invoice.
