How the difference is counted

The calendar figure is produced by stepping whole months forward from the earlier date until one more step would overshoot, then counting the days left over. Dividing a duration by 365 or 30 does not work: months are 28–31 days and years are 365 or 366, so that approach drifts by a day per leap year.

The month-end case

Subtracting the day, month and year fields separately and borrowing fails at month ends. From 31 January to 1 March, borrowing February's days still leaves a negative count, because 31 February does not exist. Clamping instead says 31 January + 1 month = 28 or 29 February, leaving 1 day — which is the answer a person would give.

Daylight saving

All arithmetic here runs in UTC. A day that crosses a clock change is 23 or 25 hours long, and whole-day division truncates, so a local-time calculation lands a day out for any span crossing a DST boundary. UTC never observes daylight saving, so the problem does not arise.

Working days and inclusive counting

  • Working days counts Monday to Friday between the two dates. Public holidays vary by country and are not deducted.
  • Count both end dates adds one day, which is what contracts, notice periods and leave requests usually mean by "from the 1st to the 5th".
